The Value of the Law
Series: Romans
The Law is a revealer.  In Rom. 7:7-13 Paul shows us that the Law reveals 3 things – 1) The law reveals sin; 2) The law reveals my sinfulness; and 3) The law reveals my need to be saved from sin.
The Law is good because it shows me I am not.

    Dying to Live
    Series: Romans
Christians die in order to live.  In Romans 7, Paul begins to explain what place the Law has in the life of a believer, now that Christ has come.  He makes 4 suggestions in verses 1-6. 1) The Law only has authority as long as we live; 2) Through faith in Christ we have died to the Law; 3) Because we died to the Law, we are now free to live under God's love; and 4) Death to the Law produces fruitful servants, not flagrant sinners.

True freedom comes not from following rules, but from following Jesus.

    Finding Freedom from Sin
    Series: Romans
Paul brings up the topic of slavery as an illustration of how we all live our lives.  We are all enslaved to something or someone.  Ultimately, we are either enslaved to our sin nature, or to God.  With Romans 6:15-23 Paul helps us to see that we have a choice.

Paul begins by stating again that grace does not give us freedom to sin.  Thankfully, though, we are free to choose what controls us.  He concludes by clearly explaining that our choice of what controls us has eternal consequences.

Through faith in Christ we become free to live for Christ.

With Great Freedom Comes Great Responsibility
    Series: Romans
In Romans 6, Paul helps us to see what Christians should do with the sin in their lives.  He gives us 8 things to remember.

Remember that you have died to sin; remember that you are united with Christ, in both His death and in His resurrection; remember that you have been set free from slavery to sin; remember that because you have died with Christ, you will also live with Christ; remember to constantly reflect on this truth; remember not to let sin rule your body; and remember that you live under God’s grace.

Sin’s power is broken when we believe in Jesus.

    Ruin or Rescue?
    Series: Romans
In the final verses of Romans 5 Paul does a bit of comparing and contrasting.  He points to two people and how their lives have a direct impact on ours.  One of these affected us in a negative way, the other in a positive way.  One of them ruined our relationship with God, the other rescued our relationship with God.

A right relationship with God is received only through faith in Christ – Jesus rescued what Adam ruined.

    God’s Guarantee
    Series: Romans
It was Benjamin Franklin who said that in this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.  We're not many guarantees in this life.  But, God has promised us several things.  In Romans 5, Paul highlights 5 guarantees God makes to His children.  Through faith in Christ we are guaranteed that we have peace with God, that we stand in God's grace, that we can view the present in light of the future, that we experience the unconditional love of God, and that we are securely saved.

God's love guarantees that since He saved us, He will keep us.

    Believing the Impossible
    Series: Romans
God calls us to live by faith, and Abraham is held up to us as an example of the faith God is looking for.  In analyzing Abraham's example we discover 4 things: 1) Abraham hoped when things were hopeless; 2) Abraham's faith didn't weaken, though his body had; 3) Abraham's faith was strengthened as he trusted in God's strength; and 4) The faith of Abraham is the same faith God looks for today.  After a look at the example of Abraham, we will take some time to ponder God's promises.

Faith in God’s promises is the best way to face our problems.

    A Priceless Inheritance
    Series: Romans
In Romans 4:13-17, Paul shows us two mutually exclusive ways of entering into a right relationship with God - It is either by our obedience to the Law, or by faith.  There is no other alternative, and only one of those two choices actually works.  Paul essentially shows us that you can't get to heaven by obeying God. You can only get to heaven by believing God.

It is by faith we receive God's gracious promise of a priceless inheritance.

    God’s Accounting System
    Series: Romans
Basic finances and accounting are familiar enough.  But, God's accounting system is different.  In God's accounting system, by faith in Christ, God credits our account with righteousness.  Furthermore, by faith in Christ, God doesn’t debit our account with sin.

The Good News is that in His accounting system God accepts us, through our faith, just as we are.
